Is the Audi Allroad a bad car? Would an SUV be for me?

I see these things for kind of cheap on Craigslist and I’m assuming they are completely crap. Also, here is why I’m asking about an SUV:

So, I need a vehicle that can haul, and yet be a film car, simultaneously. What I will be filming is downhill skating with speeds around 30 mph all the way to 60 mph. Some of the roads my friend and I skate on are either very technical requiring good brakes and handling and some of the roads are just flat out speed. So, here are the SUVs I’m considering:

Would any of these two SUVs fit my application? I’m still looking for wagons at the moment, but I just sort of thought about these.

The Jeep or Toyota would be a drastically better option reliability wise than the Audi.

that being said the Jeep WILL break more than the Toyota. Though it’s really cheap and typically easy to fix. Spare parts are everywhere for them.

The Allroad is the poster child for cars you shouldn’t buy used.

The suspension system in these early Allroad Quattros is legendary for being very expensive to maintain. And the 2.5 V6 TDI in these is widely considered to be one of Audi’s worst engines ever.

If I were looking for something of this sort, I’d probably go for a V70 CC.

I hear I was a lucky one I loved mine after 170k miles only major fix was air suspension. But sold for only 3k. Lol

I am still looking for a wagon, but I want a decent wagon like a “luxury” wagon.

IF maintained they are supposed to be great cars. I’ve heard both horrible and great things about the 2.7 biturbo. They are supposed to be quick (but the WRX ruined that for me)

I bought my Allroad in December for $3200 with a leaky strut air bag and $173k miles. The guy gave me the bag which was for the wrong side, so he gave me back $200. So my buy-n price was $3000. I did the CV axles and each took about an hour and were $50 a piece.

I replaced both rear bags, but after getting rear ended they have settled when parked but re-inflate when I get back in. I have an oil leak from the cam shaft seal (or something like that) and its about $1000 to get that fixed but that will also get me all me seals, timing belt and pullies.

I would say if you look at one make sure the suspension, belt and oil leaks are all in check. Your going to have a hard time getting more car for less money. I have power everything, heated front and rear seats, and Quattro AWD. Its a 6 speed!. You can find some youtube videos of these things dominating snow and mud. They are also capable of towing a boat.

The 4Runner is the exact opposite of the Allroad. It is reliable to a fault. Guys we had bringing them in for service with 200k+ on them would often say, “I wish it would die so I could get something new, but I can’t justify...”

The problem is it handles like a spring mounted brick.

Don’t forget the Dodge Magnum too. Not that it’s as reliable, but they handle reasonably well and can haul literally and figuratively.

Ok well these two SUV’s are about as far from luxury as the Audi is from reliable.

Toyota will be more reliable than the Jeep, and more spacious. But it won’t handle as well, nor will it be as quick. Still, I’d buy the 4Runner.

I posted a comment on Jalopnik not too long ago with a photo of my Allroad and tons of people came out saying they had one, the parents had one... there was one dude whose family had like 3 of them.

True, but I drove both examples and I actually quite liked them. What I meant to say was wagon wise I want luxury, but for SUVs, at least something nice.

Compared to an Allroad, or in general?

They’re plasticky but cheap, so it’s commensurate.

Imo, the Allroad is one of the most innovative and awesome cars ever made. The people that own them love them, the people that don’t own them constantly bitch about them.

I love mine. But it gets closer to 20 than 30 on the mpgs unless you keep it on the freeway. Services can get pricey tho.
